Small plane bursts into flames mid-air, landing on a couple's house

A couple were watching TV at home Saturday night, when a single engine plane crashed into their house in Glibert, Arizona. Amazingly, the pair have escaped unharmed. Local police say the small aircraft was part of a demonstration for the annual Constitutional Fair, and crashed around 7:30 p.m. MDT Saturday night after catching fire mid-air.  It was a crazy stroke of luck for the skydivers on board too, who were left equally unharmed after ejecting from the plane before it crashed.  The pilot also ejected before landing, but was not so lucky, being transported for treatment after suffering burns.  Read more... Hipsters queue for hours to order a drink from shot-sinking Bill Murray

Possibly anticipating a scene from Coffee and Cigarettes, in which Bill Murray plays the waiter serving Wu Tang's GZA and RZA ( hilarity ensues ), hundreds of New Yorkers hit up 21 Greenpoint Friday night to catch a glimpse of the actor. And Bill Murray did not disappoint. Not only did the cult hero show up to the launch of the new bar and resturant, owned by his son Homer Murray and partners — Bill got to work serving up shots, singing jovially and just generally being the legend that he is. He even reportedly took four shots in the first five minutes. SEE ALSO: Bill Murray will be tending bar in Brooklyn this weekend Read more... Trump weighs in on NYC explosion, Twitter accuses him of inciting fear

Donald Trump weighed in on the cause of an explosion in New York City, declaring a “bomb went off” well before local authorities had made any official declaration about what had happened. Twitter responded swiftly, accusing the Republican presidential nominee of fearmongering.  Trump's comments came as he campaigned in Colorado, less than an hour after the 8:30pm ET explosion in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. Two hours later, the cause of the explosion was still being investigated, officials said. At least 25 people were injured and there were no reports of casualties outside the Associated Blind Housing facility at 135 W. 23rd St., where the explosion occurred. Officials described the injuries as minor. Read more... More about Twitter , Donald Trump , Explosion , New York City , and Chelsea

How smart materials will literally reshape the world around us

Over the past few years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has been the white-hot center of a flurry of activity. The IoT may well be The Next Big Thing, but maybe the attention around sensors is misplaced… What if we didn’t even need embedded sensors to allow things to gather data about their surrounding environment? What if material could be a sensor in and of itself? Read More

The dangerous lives of Gloucester fishermen

c. 1900 Image: Library of Congress Incorporated in 1642, the Massachusetts town of Gloucester has been one of the centers of the North Atlantic fishing industry for centuries. And it's seen more than its fair share of heartbreak. The town grew rapidly in the 1800s, as it provided a convenient launching point for trips to the fertile offshore fishing grounds of George’s Bank and the Grand Banks. Gloucester fishermen sailed in specially designed schooners optimized for speed and holding capacity to reach the banks, fill up on cod and other fish and return as quickly as possible. Many of these ship designs were unsafe and prone to capsizing in bad weather, however: Between 1866 and 1890, some 2,450 men and 380 schooners were lost at sea. Read more... Donald Trump gets the mobile game everyone imagined, and it's amazing

The historically unusual 2016 U.S. presidential race has turned into a kind of reality show, so it's only natural that one of its central figures, Donald Trump , now has a mobile game dedicated to his character. SEE ALSO: Donald Trump's new app tries to make personal branding great again Released on Friday, Jrump is a mobile game that challenges you to build walls (yes, really) that help a character that looks remarkably like Trump to jump higher and higher into the sky and eventually into outer space as he attempts to "make the galaxy great again."  Along the way, he is attacked by adversaries including jet pack-wearing Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Kim Jong Un and President Barack Obama. Of course, neither Trump nor his adversaries are identified by name in the game (the central character is named "Donald Jrump"), but it's fairly obvious who's who based on the theme.  Read more...
